about

The "absolute zero" is actually the negative temperature (-272°C / -458°F) at which point absolutely everything is frozen. Even the lightest particles stop moving, the air stands still, and the sound isn't carried anymore.

It's my friend Quentin De Tienda, who plays the bass on "Prequel", who told me about this one day, and it inspired me to create this track.

The real challenge here was simply this: how do I musically describe this phenomenon where absolutely nothing happens anymore? I mean, I couldn't write an absolutely empty fifteen minute track right?! You'd ask me for a refund!^^

So instead I kinda used the same concept I used on "Mind Control Facility": I edited an electronic environment to match this cold and hostile world. The high-ends of the main arpeggiator produce a somewhat cristalline sound which represents the ice.

Besides, the constant and regular flow of arpeggiated notes without aim produces at some point a feeling of stillness and the underlying harmony is suspended and therefore adds to this effect.

It's like we're wandering on a desolate landscape of absolute stillness, and everything looks the same in every direction.

Then at some point, the bridge section offers a brighter ambiance: here I imagined I was arriving at the edge of a cliff opening on a vast and beautiful valley, and was standing there, breathless at the sight of it.

Then, I am experiencing a moment of profound silence in the middle of this nothingness, before I start walking again.

Now we're back on the main themes as we wander again, and the lead guitar becomes more and more melodic and expressive: as we get accustomed to this desolate world and its beauty, we're now slowing slipping into madness...
